The UK 35 × 45 mm requirement
UK passport photos are 35 × 45 mm with a plain cream or light-grey background, a neutral expression, and the head sized so that it sits clearly within the frame. If you are submitting online you upload a digital photo; if by post you attach two printed copies.

How to make a UK passport photo

UK passport photo rules & notes
- The printed UK passport photo is 35 × 45 mm (413 × 531 px at 300 DPI), and HM Passport Office specifically asks for a plain light-grey or cream background — not pure white.
- You need a neutral expression with the mouth closed, eyes open and visible, nothing covering the face, and no glasses unless you have to wear them (in which case the eyes must be clear with no glare).
- For online UK passport applications the digital photo has its own rules (a minimum pixel size and a maximum file size), so always check the current requirements on gov.uk before uploading.
