Make a passport photo that meets the rules
A passport photo has to be an exact physical size, printed at a high enough resolution, with your head at the right height and a plain background. How to make a passport photo

Take a good source photo
Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression, eyes open, mouth closed. Use soft, even light so there are no shadows on your face or the wall behind you, and stand far enough from the wall to avoid a drop shadow. A plain white or light wall makes the background step effortless.

Passport photo (US 2 × 2 default) rules & notes
- Passport-photo sizes are not universal: the United States uses 2 × 2 inches (600 × 600 px at 300 DPI) while most of the rest of the world uses 35 × 45 mm, so pick the slug that matches the country you are applying to.
- Across almost every country the rules are the same in spirit: a recent colour photo, a plain light background, a neutral expression with the mouth closed, both eyes open and visible, and no glasses glare or head covering (except for daily religious wear).
- Always confirm the current size, background colour, and head-height rule on the issuing country's official passport or visa portal before you print, because finer requirements are revised from time to time.
