Read a QR code without an app

Sometimes a QR code is already in an image — a screenshot, a saved photo, a PDF page, or a poster you snapped. This reader decodes the code from that image and shows you exactly what it contains: a website link, Wi-Fi details, text, an email, or a phone number.

There is nothing to install. Upload, drag, or paste the image and the code is read on the spot, with a copy button for the result. If it is a link, you get a safe, clearly-labelled link you can choose to open.

How to read a QR code from an image

  1. Switch to Read. The reader is the second tab at the top of the tool.
  2. Add the image. Drop in a screenshot or photo, choose a file, or paste an image from your clipboard.
  3. See the result. The code's contents appear instantly — a link, text, Wi-Fi, and more.
  4. Copy or open. Copy the text, or open the link if you trust it.

Use a clear, well-lit image

For the most reliable read, use an image where the whole code is visible, in focus, and well lit, with a little margin around it. Very blurry, cropped, or heavily angled photos can be hard to decode — re-snap or re-crop if the first try fails.

What the decoded text means

When this reader decodes a code it shows you the raw stored string. A leading prefix tells you what the code was meant to do — here's how to read the common ones:

If the result starts with… …the code is
http:// or https:// a website link — shown here as a clickable, clearly-labelled link you can choose to open.
WIFI: Wi-Fi credentials (network name, security type, and password) for joining a network.
mailto: an email — an address, often with a subject and body, meant to open a pre-filled draft.
tel: a phone number to dial.
SMSTO: or smsto: a text message — a number and, sometimes, a pre-written message body.
(no prefix) plain text — a note, code, or message with no action attached.

Reading codes reliably

  • The reader decodes the whole image at once, so it works on screenshots, saved photos, PDF pages exported as images, and scans — not just live camera shots.
  • Treat a decoded link with the same caution as any unknown link: the tool labels it clearly and never opens it automatically, so you stay in control.
  • If the result looks like gibberish rather than a tidy prefix, the source code may be damaged or only partially captured — re-snap or re-crop and read it again.
  • A Wi-Fi result exposes the network password in plain text, which is normal for that format; just be mindful of who can see your screen.

Frequently asked questions

How do I read a QR code from a picture?

Switch to Read, then drop in the picture, choose a file, or paste it. The code is decoded and its contents are shown with a copy button.

Do I need an app to read a QR code?

No. This reader runs in your browser on any device — phone, tablet, or computer — with nothing to install.

It says no code was found — why?

The image may be too blurry, too small, cropped, or badly lit. Use a clearer image where the whole code is visible and try again.

Where is my image processed?

Building or reading a QR code happens in your browser, so the file is created on your own device. How any data associated with the tool is handled is described in our privacy policy.
