Changes how fast the GIF plays by dividing each frame's delay by your multiplier — 2× halves the delays so it plays twice as fast, 0.5× doubles them so it plays at half speed. No frames are added or removed.

What to know about the GIF format here

GIF speed lives entirely in the per-frame delay value, not in any frame rate setting, so changing speed simply rewrites those delays while keeping the same frames.

Tips for the best result

• Per-frame delay can't go below about 20 ms in practice (a ~50 fps ceiling), so on a GIF that already has few frames, very high speeds can look choppy rather than faster.
• Slowing down is always smooth because it just holds each existing frame longer; speeding up shortens the holds and can reveal that a low-frame GIF was never very fluid.
• Changing speed does not change the file size, since the frames themselves are untouched — only their timing is rewritten.
• If a sped-up GIF looks juddery, the fix is more frames (re-make it from a higher-fps source), not a higher multiplier.

When to use this

Reach for this when a GIF feels too frantic or too sluggish — to calm a hectic loop, to add a slow-motion beat, or to tighten a slow demo — without re-recording it.

How GIF files behave

• A GIF stores up to 256 colours per frame from a palette it picks for that frame, so flat graphics, logos, line art, and screen recordings reproduce cleanly, while photographic gradients and skin tones can band or dither.
• GIF compression (LZW) is lossless per frame — it never adds JPEG-style blocky artefacts — but because every frame is essentially a full image, the file grows quickly with more frames, more pixels, and more colours.
• Animation timing is stored as a per-frame delay in hundredths of a second, and looping is set by a small repeat marker (the Netscape extension), which is why a GIF can loop forever on its own with no player controls.
• A GIF has no audio track and no real alpha blending — only a single fully-transparent colour — so it is built for short, silent, looping motion rather than full video; a muted MP4 or WebM is far smaller for anything longer than a few seconds.
