Cut the edges off a GIF
Sometimes a GIF has dead space around the subject, a black border, or a watermark in the corner. Cropping removes it. This tool trims the same region from every frame and re-encodes a tighter animated GIF.
Set how much to cut from the left, top, right, and bottom as a percentage, and the preview shows the result. The frame timing and loop carry over unchanged.
How to crop a GIF
- Open your GIF. Drag it onto the tool, or choose a file.
- Trim the edges. Drag the left, top, right, and bottom sliders to cut away what you don't need.
- Make & download. Click Apply & make GIF to download the cropped, still-animated GIF.
Crop to a square for social
Many feeds prefer a square. Trim the longer sides by equal amounts until the width and height match, then download — your GIF will sit neatly in a 1:1 frame.
Crop a GIF: how it works
Trims the same rectangular region off every frame and re-encodes a tighter animated GIF. You set how much to cut from the left, top, right, and bottom as a percentage, and the timing and loop carry over unchanged.
- Applies to
- Every frame, identically
- Crop input
- Left / top / right / bottom %
- Keeps
- Animation, timing, loop
- Side effect
- Smaller file (fewer pixels)
- Square crop
- Trim longer side equally
What to know about the GIF format here
Because the crop is applied identically to all frames, the animation stays aligned; and since cropping removes pixels, it also makes the GIF lighter — the opposite of padding it.
Tips for the best result
- Cropping is a quick way to remove a black border, dead space, or a watermark sitting in one corner of the clip.
- To get a square for feeds that prefer 1:1, trim the longer dimension by equal amounts on both sides until width and height match.
- Fewer pixels per frame means a smaller file, so a tight crop both reframes the subject and trims the file size at once.
- The insets are percentages of the original dimensions, so the same crop setting works regardless of the GIF's exact pixel size.
When to use this
Reach for this when the GIF has more around the subject than you want — borders, empty margins, a stray watermark — or when you need to reframe it to a square or a tighter ratio.
How GIF files behave
- A GIF stores up to 256 colours per frame from a palette it picks for that frame, so flat graphics, logos, line art, and screen recordings reproduce cleanly, while photographic gradients and skin tones can band or dither.
- GIF compression (LZW) is lossless per frame — it never adds JPEG-style blocky artefacts — but because every frame is essentially a full image, the file grows quickly with more frames, more pixels, and more colours.
- Animation timing is stored as a per-frame delay in hundredths of a second, and looping is set by a small repeat marker (the Netscape extension), which is why a GIF can loop forever on its own with no player controls.
- A GIF has no audio track and no real alpha blending — only a single fully-transparent colour — so it is built for short, silent, looping motion rather than full video; a muted MP4 or WebM is far smaller for anything longer than a few seconds.

Frequently asked questions
Does cropping apply to every frame?
Yes. The same region is removed from all frames so the animation stays consistent.
Does the GIF stay animated?
Yes — cropping keeps the animation, frame timing, and loop in the new GIF.
Can I crop a GIF to a square?
Yes. Trim the longer dimension with the edge sliders until the width and height are equal.
Where is my image processed?
The GIF is built in your browser, so the new file is created on your own device. How any data associated with the tool is handled is described in our privacy policy.
