How do I make a background transparent?

Why does my JPG still have a white background?
JPG cannot store transparency, so it fills empty areas with white. Always export as PNG (or WebP) to keep the background transparent. This tool exports PNG for exactly that reason.
Will the transparent areas show as a checkerboard?
The checkerboard pattern is just how editors display transparency — it is not part of the file. Placed on a coloured background, the transparent areas let that colour show through.
