Why use a dummy image?

A dummy image is a temporary picture that holds the space where a real image will eventually go. Dropping dummy images into a design lets you check spacing, alignment, and how a page reflows on different screens long before the photographer, illustrator, or client delivers the finals.

This dummy image generator creates one at the exact size you type, with a caption (the dimensions by default) and colours of your choosing. Everything happens in your browser, so you get the file the instant you click Download.

How to make a dummy image

  1. Enter the dimensions. Type the width and height you need, or pick a common preset.
  2. Customise it. Set the background and text colours and type any label — or leave the auto dimensions.
  3. Save it. Choose PNG or SVG and download. Drop it straight into your mock-up.

Keep dummy images obvious

Use a clearly 'placeholder' look — a flat grey with the size written on it, or a diagonal cross — so nobody mistakes a dummy image for finished artwork during review.
