JPG vs AVIF: what changes

JPG (JPEG) is a lossy raster format tuned for photographs: it discards detail the eye barely notices to reach small file sizes, but it has no transparency and re-saving repeatedly compounds the quality loss.

AVIF is the newest mainstream raster format, built on the AV1 video codec. It does lossy and lossless compression with transparency and HDR, and is typically about 20% smaller than WebP — roughly half the size of an equivalent JPEG.

AVIF supports transparency, though a JPG has none to carry over — the image simply stays fully opaque. Both formats are lossy, so re-encoding adds a little more compression on top of what's already there; use a high quality setting to keep it negligible. When to convert JPG to AVIF

Converting JPG to AVIF squeezes a photo down to roughly half its JPEG size at comparable quality, making it the most aggressive single step you can take to lighten image-heavy pages.

Good to know: The JPG is already lossy, so quality can't improve, and AVIF encoding takes longer; keep a JPG or WebP fallback for the few visitors on older devices.
