GIF is an old raster format limited to a 256-colour palette with only on/off (1-bit) transparency. Its one real advantage is short looping animation; for still images it is larger and lower-fidelity than PNG.

PNG is a lossless raster format with a full alpha (transparency) channel, so it reproduces sharp edges, flat colour and text pixel-for-pixel with no compression artefacts.

Transparency is preserved, since both GIF and PNG support an alpha channel.
