Why add a border to a photo?
A border gives a photo room to breathe. It separates the image from whatever it sits on — a feed, a slide, a document, a website — so the picture reads as a deliberate object rather than blending into the background. A simple white or black frame is the quickest way to make a snapshot look finished.
This tool draws the border around your image at full resolution, so the photo itself is never resized or recompressed by the framing. Set the thickness as a percentage of the photo so it scales sensibly whatever the image size, pick a solid colour or a two-tone gradient, and the live preview shows the result instantly.
How to add a border to an image
- Open your image. Drag a photo onto the tool above, choose a file, or paste from your clipboard.
- Choose width and colour. Drag the border-width slider, then pick a colour — or switch to Gradient for a two-tone edge with an adjustable angle.
- Download. Click Download to save the framed image — in the same format you opened, or switch to PNG, JPG, or WebP.
Pick a border colour that works
White borders suit bright, airy photos and look clean on most backgrounds; black borders add weight and make colours pop. If the image will sit on a coloured page, match the border to the page for a seamless look, or contrast it to make the photo stand out.

How thick should the border be?
It's up to you, but 3–8% of the photo's shorter edge is a balanced, classic look. The slider uses a percentage so the border scales correctly whatever the image size.
Can I use a gradient instead of a solid colour?
Yes. Switch the style to Gradient, pick two colours, and set the angle. The border blends smoothly from one colour to the other.
Does adding a border change the photo's quality?
No. The border is drawn around the image at full resolution, so the photo is untouched. Any change comes only from re-encoding at a low JPG/WebP quality.
Where is my image processed?
The border is added in your browser, so the new file is created on your own device. How any data associated with the tool is handled is described in our privacy policy.
