Redaction removes detail for good

Redacting means covering sensitive information with a solid, opaque bar — the black rectangles you see on released documents. Unlike a blur or a mosaic, a redaction bar replaces the pixels underneath entirely, so there is nothing left to reconstruct. It's the right choice for account numbers, signatures, addresses, and anything confidential.

Drag a bar over each detail you want gone. The default colour is black, but you can pick any colour to match the document. When you download, the bars are flattened into a single image — there are no hidden layers, so the redacted content can't be peeled back from the saved file.

How to redact an image

  1. Open your image or screenshot. Drag it onto the tool, choose a file, or paste it.
  2. Bar each detail. With Redact selected, drag a solid bar over every piece of sensitive information.
  3. Download the flattened file. Click Download — the bars are baked into the image, with nothing recoverable beneath.

Why a bar beats a blur

Blurred and pixelated text has occasionally been reversed by determined attackers, because some original information survives. A solid redaction bar leaves nothing behind — for anything that truly must stay secret, redact rather than blur.

Questions fréquentes

Is redaction safer than blurring?

Yes. A solid bar replaces the pixels completely, so there is no underlying detail to recover — unlike a blur or pixelation, which can sometimes be partly reversed.

Can the black bar be removed from the file?

No. When you download, the bar is flattened into the image. There are no separate layers, so the covered content is gone from the saved file.

Can I use a colour other than black?

Yes. The bar is black by default, but you can pick any colour with the bar-colour picker to match your document.

Where is my image processed?

The blurring happens in your browser, so the new file is created on your own device. How any data associated with the tool is handled is described in our privacy policy.
